Perrie Edwards Talks ‘Glory Days’: ‘It Was Kind Of Like Therapy For Us’
posted by: Summer Glory Days Interview Perrie

Their forthcoming studio release Glory Days is out on November 18 and it promises to be the group’s most honest and eclectic yet. Member Perrie Edwards was kind enough to speak with us about the therapeutic nature of songwriting, the evolution of the Little Mix sound, their forthcoming 2017 tour with Ariana Grande and why they decided — as a group! — to be so candid and revealing in their recent book Our World.

I know it was only two years between Salute and Get Weird but it felt like much longer. Thankfully, there’s a shorter wait for Glory Days since it’s out in November. Was the writing process easier this time around? What inspired you guys to put out an album more quickly than before?
I think with the Get Weird album, it was the hardest album we’ve ever made so we had no idea what sound we wanted to go for, we didn’t really know what we wanted to write about…and so it took a lot of time. But the Glory Days album literally just kind of fell into place. It was kind of like therapy for us, I think. We spoke about everything we’ve been through over the past year or even the past five years in our career. And it just felt like the easiest album to make. It’s just been incredible, and we’re so excited about it. That’s why we can’t wait to get it out.

So would you say Glory Days is more autobiographical than your past albums?
I think so. Honestly, I think we poured our hearts and souls into this album, so it’s a very kind of love and heartbreak album, but we’re just really passionate about it.

Your sound has evolved a lot since DNA. That album had more of a straight-up pop sound, Salute was more R&B, and then Get Weird incorporated more rock and ‘80s pop. So your sound has shifted a lot over the years, which is great because it keeps things from getting stagnant. Where would you say Glory Days falls, sound-wise?
The thing is with us is, we never want to be predictable. But at the same time we know what our fans love and we know what kind of sounds we want to get across to everyone. But this album is definitely more eclectic — it’s completely different to what we’ve done on our other albums. Take all the best things of our other albums and jam them into one. Our second single in particular that we love, it’s so cool — the sound production, the harmonies, the melodies — it’s very catchy tunes that people just want to listen to.

Where did the album title come from?
So Glory Days is, basically, we’ve been saying that these are the best days of our lives and we’re gonna look back on this when we’re really old and think “Wow, we had so much fun, we absolutely loved it and we had the best times of our lives.” I feel like we’re living our glory days now.

Let’s talk about the lead single, “Shout Out to My Ex.” Why do you think it’s so relatable as a concept…the idea of moving on from a toxic ex or a disaster ex?
I think when you go through a breakup, the first initial thing you do is put on music. I think everyone can relate to music. It doesn’t matter who you are in the world, where you are in the world. Your initial reaction is to listen to really sad songs and get upset and get emotional. But I feel like we’re kind of missing that anthemic, I don’t really care anymore song that makes you feel amazing and makes you feel empowered and it’s inspirational. And everybody in the world can relate to it, because everybody’s got an ex, and everybody needs a little pick me up I think, which is nice, so that’s why we did it. We want everybody to feel great about themselves.

Girls about “Glory Days” – From mischief to Meghan Trainor.
posted by: Summer Album Glory Days Interview Little Mix Music

Right Little Mix, we’re depending on you to save British pop – and we have every faith you’ll be able to do so before Christmas. With their new single ‘Shout Out To My Ex’ premiering on October 16 and fourth studio album Glory Days out on November 18, Digital Spy sat down with Jesy, Perrie, Leigh-Anne and Jade to find out just what they’ve got in store for us – and it sounds like we won’t be disappointed.

1. ‘Shout Out To My Ex’ is the mischievous side of Little Mix
“It literally sounds like nothing on the radio right now, which is so exciting,” Jesy Nelson tells us. “I feel like everything sounds the same at the moment. Ours is very different. It’s very honest, it’s very sassy, and it’s just a naughtier side of Little Mix, which I like.”

But in what way, Jesy?

“In the sense that we don’t really give a shit and we just feel like it’s about time people know the truth.” (You can draw your own conclusions about who she’s talking about.) “We love it as well because it’s a song that every person can relate to. Everyone in the world has gone through heartbreak and a shitty experience, and when you hear this song, it doesn’t make you feel sad, it makes you feel really good about yourself. It makes you think, ‘Oh my god, I’m so much better without this person.’ Every person needs that when they’ve had a break-up. There’s not many songs like that.”

2. But don’t assume ‘Shout Out To My Ex’ is a reflection of what’s to come
“I think it’s completely different though,” Leigh-Anne tells us. “The reason we love ‘Shout Out To My Ex’ so much is because it is a statement. With a Little Mix album, it’s always very versatile.”

That being said, after Get Weird, the girls knew exactly what they wanted to do next.

“After the Get Weird album we knew what sound we wanted to go with straight away, and it just kind of happened really naturally,” Jesy says. “We wrote some songs, we’ve got some songs that were written for us and they just all fitted really well together. We just felt like there was no point in waiting around and we should just get it out.” We couldn’t agree more.

3. Little Mix’s new album isn’t just for teen girls, y’know
“You want to keep that success or better it,” Jade tells us. “Get Weird was huge, but I think we’re really confident with this album. I feel it can relate to even more people than Get Weird did – like boys or women. We’re branching out from our usual target audience.”
Jesy adds: “It’s way more mature. There are more dance-y songs – ones that will get played in clubs, which is nice for us. It’s just a new era of Little Mix.” We are so ready.

4. Brace yourselves for all killer, no filler
While Jade promises that Little Mix’s fourth studio album will be packed with “killer hooks” and “brilliant pop songs”, Leigh-Anne goes one further by naming the thing they’re most proud of on the collection: “There’s this one song that I think our vocals are just, like, crazy.”
“The only way is up – we’ve never really dipped. I feel like we’ve kept this progression, but we’re still striving for more,” Leigh says. “Hopefully this will be the album where we just go BAM! and explode. It’s everything we want in life.”

5. So c’mon then, who have they been working with?
The girls have teamed up with some old faves as well as some exciting global superstars for LM4. So Perrie, can you tell us who you’ve been in the studio with? “Iain James has done a bit, who we worked with for ‘Wings’ and ‘DNA’,” she reveals. “MNEK has done some production on some stuff, and we absolutely love him. Charlie Puth has wrote us a song. And Meghan Trainor has wrote us a song. It’s been wonderful!”
But Leigh-Anne has something else to add: “Hopefully as well we’re going to have some amazing features.” Argh, you always tease us with this and never tell us who. “Oh we can’t tell you, darlin’,” she adds. Fingers crossed for that Nicki Minaj team-up…
