Shout Out To My Ex is available on Spotify now!
Right Little Mix, we’re depending on you to save British pop – and we have every faith you’ll be able to do so before Christmas. With their new single ‘Shout Out To My Ex’ premiering on October 16 and fourth studio album Glory Days out on November 18, Digital Spy sat down with Jesy, Perrie, Leigh-Anne and Jade to find out just what they’ve got in store for us – and it sounds like we won’t be disappointed.
1. ‘Shout Out To My Ex’ is the mischievous side of Little Mix
“It literally sounds like nothing on the radio right now, which is so exciting,” Jesy Nelson tells us. “I feel like everything sounds the same at the moment. Ours is very different. It’s very honest, it’s very sassy, and it’s just a naughtier side of Little Mix, which I like.”But in what way, Jesy?
“In the sense that we don’t really give a shit and we just feel like it’s about time people know the truth.” (You can draw your own conclusions about who she’s talking about.) “We love it as well because it’s a song that every person can relate to. Everyone in the world has gone through heartbreak and a shitty experience, and when you hear this song, it doesn’t make you feel sad, it makes you feel really good about yourself. It makes you think, ‘Oh my god, I’m so much better without this person.’ Every person needs that when they’ve had a break-up. There’s not many songs like that.”
2. But don’t assume ‘Shout Out To My Ex’ is a reflection of what’s to come
“I think it’s completely different though,” Leigh-Anne tells us. “The reason we love ‘Shout Out To My Ex’ so much is because it is a statement. With a Little Mix album, it’s always very versatile.”That being said, after Get Weird, the girls knew exactly what they wanted to do next.
“After the Get Weird album we knew what sound we wanted to go with straight away, and it just kind of happened really naturally,” Jesy says. “We wrote some songs, we’ve got some songs that were written for us and they just all fitted really well together. We just felt like there was no point in waiting around and we should just get it out.” We couldn’t agree more.
3. Little Mix’s new album isn’t just for teen girls, y’know
“You want to keep that success or better it,” Jade tells us. “Get Weird was huge, but I think we’re really confident with this album. I feel it can relate to even more people than Get Weird did – like boys or women. We’re branching out from our usual target audience.”
Jesy adds: “It’s way more mature. There are more dance-y songs – ones that will get played in clubs, which is nice for us. It’s just a new era of Little Mix.” We are so ready.4. Brace yourselves for all killer, no filler
While Jade promises that Little Mix’s fourth studio album will be packed with “killer hooks” and “brilliant pop songs”, Leigh-Anne goes one further by naming the thing they’re most proud of on the collection: “There’s this one song that I think our vocals are just, like, crazy.”
“The only way is up – we’ve never really dipped. I feel like we’ve kept this progression, but we’re still striving for more,” Leigh says. “Hopefully this will be the album where we just go BAM! and explode. It’s everything we want in life.”5. So c’mon then, who have they been working with?
The girls have teamed up with some old faves as well as some exciting global superstars for LM4. So Perrie, can you tell us who you’ve been in the studio with? “Iain James has done a bit, who we worked with for ‘Wings’ and ‘DNA’,” she reveals. “MNEK has done some production on some stuff, and we absolutely love him. Charlie Puth has wrote us a song. And Meghan Trainor has wrote us a song. It’s been wonderful!”
But Leigh-Anne has something else to add: “Hopefully as well we’re going to have some amazing features.” Argh, you always tease us with this and never tell us who. “Oh we can’t tell you, darlin’,” she adds. Fingers crossed for that Nicki Minaj team-up…
Little Mix talk about Shout Out My Ex and Luke Pasqualino!
Perrie has confirmed she wants nothing to do with her former lover, and has refused to let him hear the diss track before it gets released. When asked whether she warned Zayn about the song in advance, she bluntly replied: “No.” And bandmate Jesy Nelson had no problem explaining why, adding to The Sun: “We don’t think he deserves a warning! He’ll just have to wait to see.” The band’s new song – which is the lead single from their fourth studio album, Glory Days – will be performed live on this Sunday’s X Factor for the first time, and then immediately become available for download. Shout Out To My Ex’s lyrics waste no time getting to the point, either. In one scathing line, the girls reference Zayn’s Perrie tattoo, as they sing: “Guess I should say thank you, For the ‘hate yous’ and the tattoos, Oh baby I’m cool by the way, Ain’t sure I loved you anyway.” And while Perrie is finally serving up her revenge, the songstress isn’t entirely about focusing on the past. Instead, she’s looking towards the future with her Our Girl actor beau, Luke Pasqualino. The singer recently started dating the former Skins actor and was even spotted kissing him at Leigh-Anne Pinnock’s 25th birthday party last weekend. When speaking about their romance, Perrie said: “We’ve been on a few fun dates, which is nice. It’s very early days. It’s early days but yeah, he’s really lovely.” And when asked whether Luke has heard their new single, she replied: “Yeah, he thought it was good.” While Perrie may not have let Zayn know about the bombshell about to be dropped, Leigh-Anne gave her ex, Jordan Kiffin a heads up. She revealed that the pair are still friends and she didn’t want to be rude, explaining “it’s a strong statement” before adding” “It’s not going to be nice for any of them, let’s face it.”
